Traditional Greek Salad (Horiatiki) — Mediterranean Salad with Tomatoes, Cucumber, Olives and Feta
Introduction
Greek salad, known in Greece as “Horiatiki” (village salad), is one of the most emblematic dishes of Mediterranean cuisine. It takes just minutes to prepare, with fresh seasonal vegetables, good olive oil and feta cheese — and needs no cooking.
Ingredients (for 4 servings)
- 4 large ripe tomatoes
- 1 large cucumber
- 1 medium red onion
- 1 green bell pepper
- 200 g feta cheese
- 100 g Kalamata olives
- 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- Salt and pepper to taste
Preparation steps
- Cut the tomatoes into medium cubes and the cucumber into not-too-thin slices.
- Cut the red onion into thin half-rings and the green pepper into strips.
- Place all the vegetables in a large salad bowl and toss lightly.
- Add the Kalamata olives over the vegetables.
- Place the feta cheese in a single block on top of the salad (this is how it is traditionally served).
- Drizzle with olive oil, add the oregano, salt and pepper.
- Let it rest for about 10 minutes before serving so the flavors blend.
Serving
Serve fresh, with toasted bread to soak up the delicious olive-oil sauce.
