Tragedy at sea off Gavdos: one dead and 25 missing after migrant boat capsizes

One person died and 25 others remain missing after a migrant boat sank off the Greek island of Gavdos, near Crete, the Greek coast guard announced on Monday to AFP.

51 people were rescued by two vessels that were in the area, while according to the survivors there were 77 people on board when the vessel sank.

Search efforts continue. The rescue operation involved four nearby vessels and two Frontex vessels, the EU’s border agency; another coast guard vessel, a Frontex vessel and a helicopter were directed to the scene.

Crete and Gavdos, some 320 kilometers from the Libyan coast, have become the main entry points for migrants into Greece.

One of the rescued was found unconscious, the coast guard announced.

Gavdos is the southernmost island of Greece, in the central Mediterranean.
