Another report of domestic violence has shaken the Lavrio area in Greece, at a time when the country is facing another grave incident, in which a 32-year-old woman and her 33-year-old partner were seriously injured after a suspected attack by the woman’s ex-partner.

In this climate, a 23-year-old Greek woman, a mother of one child and pregnant with her second, has told Greek media that for years she has lived amid fear, threats and constant harassment, accusing her ex-partner, a 31-year-old Albanian, of violence and threats.

According to her, the 31-year-old, who, according to the published information, is in Greece with asylum status, is currently being sought by the Greek police under the flagrante procedure, following an incident that occurred a day earlier at a playground in the Palm Forest area of Lavrio.

The allegations of violence in 2024

The 23-year-old claims that in 2024, when she and the 31-year-old were still in a relationship and had a child, he returned to the apartment and, according to her, possibly under the influence of substances, physically attacked her.

She claims her ex-partner punched and kicked her, forcibly dragged her by the hair and threatened her life, until the moment she lost consciousness. According to her testimony, the attack also occurred at a moment when she was holding their child in her arms.

After the incident, she claims she was taken by her ex-partner to the Lavrio Health Centre. According to her, pressure was then exerted on her not to reveal the real cause of her injuries and to state that she had fallen down the stairs.

The 23-year-old has filed a complaint for domestic violence and a criminal file has been opened on the case. According to her, the case is still under examination and the court hearing has been scheduled for November.

“They gave me a Panic Button, but the threats continued”

After the separation, the 23-year-old says she was provided with the “Panic Button” system, while restrictive measures were also imposed on her ex-partner, including a ban on approaching her at a distance of less than 50 metres. However, she claims the threats and harassment did not stop.

According to her, after she started a new relationship and became pregnant, her ex-partner’s behaviour became even more aggressive. She claims she has received phone calls and threats and has faced instances of him approaching her which, according to her, constitute violations of the restrictive measures.

“I am constantly afraid for my life,” the 23-year-old said, adding that she also worries about her child and the baby she is expecting.

The latest incident at a playground

The 23-year-old claims the situation has escalated in the recent period. She described an incident that occurred a day earlier at a playground in Lavrio, where their child was also present.

According to her, her ex-partner appeared in a tense state, shouted and threatened her, causing concern among the citizens who were in the area.

According to her testimony, passers-by notified the police, while the 31-year-old left the scene. For him, according to the reports, the flagrante procedure has been activated and the police are looking for him.

“The pressure has also affected my pregnancy”

The 23-year-old also claims that the constant psychological pressure has affected her pregnancy. She says she is in the sixth month of a pregnancy considered high-risk and that doctors have recommended she limit her activity and rest, because of her medical history.

According to her, on two occasions she feared the pregnancy could be put at risk because of the stress caused, as she claims, by the constant threats and harassment.

In the latest incident, she says that after a severe psychological episode she was taken urgently to a hospital in Athens to undergo medical checks, as she feared for the baby’s condition.

“They are not protecting me where I live”

Another grave claim by the 23-year-old concerns the way she says she was treated by the police in 2024, when she had sought help in Lavrio. According to her, at that moment an officer told her: “Go back to your husband.”

This is a claim which, if confirmed by the relevant authorities, raises questions about the way a victim of domestic violence is treated at the moment she seeks protection.

“I am constantly afraid for my life,” the 23-year-old repeated, demanding immediate and effective protection.

Meanwhile, according to her, family and court issues also continue regarding the way the 31-year-old has contact with their child.

The 23-year-old says she wants every meeting with the child to take place in a safe environment and in the presence of third persons, so that direct contact between the two ex-partners is avoided.

She asks the authorities to investigate her claims of threats, harassment and violations of the restrictive measures, and for all necessary measures to be taken to protect her, her minor child and the baby she is expecting. “Before it is too late…”
