Trump Turns Triumphal Arch Into Military Complex: Drones and Snipers Over Washington
U.S. President Donald Trump announced Sunday morning, in a post on Truth Social, that he has agreed — “at the strong request of the United States Army and for national security purposes” — to turn the planned triumphal arch in Washington D.C. into a “top-class Military Complex/Triumphal Arch.”
The 250-foot (about 76-meter) tall arch is planned to be erected in the Reception District near Arlington Memorial Bridge in Washington. According to the president’s announcement, the structure will house and enable the rapid deployment of a large number of drones, as well as snipers both on the terrace and in the plaza areas, while also holding large quantities of sniper ammunition in storage.
“Of 59 major cities and capitals, Washington D.C. IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE WORLD WITHOUT A TRIUMPHAL ARCH, but now it will have one and, by far, the largest of them all!” Trump wrote.
The arch passed last week the FAA’s security review regarding the 250-foot height near Reagan Airport — on condition that an “eternal flame” be added at the top and three lighting projectors for pilots. Final approval from the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC) is still pending, while the National Park Service estimates construction will require 20 hours of work per day for 2–3 years.
The project remains controversial: Democrats call it a vanity project and have introduced legislation to block its funding.
