Turkish citizen wanted by Ankara’s Interpol arrested at Podgorica Airport

Turkish citizen E.K. (42) was arrested yesterday at Podgorica Airport, Montenegro’s Police Directorate announced. An international arrest warrant had been issued for him by Interpol’s National Central Bureau (NCB) in Ankara.

“Officers of the ‘Center’ Regional Border Police Center, in cooperation with officers of the Department for Combating Crime, yesterday at the ‘Podgorica Airport’ border crossing, upon entering our country, detained the citizen of the Republic of Turkey E.K. (42), for whom an NCB Interpol Ankara international arrest warrant had been issued, on suspicion of committing the criminal offense of fraud through information systems, using banking or credit institutions as a means,” the Police statement said.

According to police, the Interpol international warrant for E.K. was issued on the basis of an order by Turkey’s competent authorities, to secure his presence in the criminal proceedings conducted against him before the competent court in that country.

Police clarified that this is a criminal offense for which, under Turkey’s Penal Code, a prison sentence of up to 10 years is foreseen.

“Communication between NCB Interpol Podgorica and NCB Interpol Ankara will continue to undertake activities aimed at extraditing this person to the competent authorities of the Republic of Turkey. E.K., within the legal deadline, was handed over to the investigating judge of the High Court in Podgorica for further proceedings,” the statement said.
