Turner Prize 2026 opens at MIMA: the four nominees confront apocalypse, greed and grief

The Turner Prize 2026 exhibition opens to the public on September 26, 2026 at the Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art (MIMA), in the British city of Middlesbrough, and will remain open until March 29, 2027. The Turner Prize is one of the most prestigious awards of British art, given each year to the most outstanding artists of contemporary art in the United Kingdom. This year’s winner will be announced on December 10, 2026 and will receive the £25,000 prize.

The four artists nominated this year are Marguerite Humeau, Tanoa Sasraku, Simeon Barclay and Kira Freije. The shortlist was announced by Tate Britain in April 2026 and their works confront the public with themes such as apocalypse, greed and grief, in an exhibition that critics have described as one of the most discussed of recent years.

Marguerite Humeau presents the installation “Torches” — post-dystopian sculptural environments with luminous crystal beads, horns and resonant batteries, a glass and granite structure, a giant honeycomb structure and trunks with fungal growth. Tanoa Sasraku presents “Morale Patch” — dozens of acrylic paperweights, each with a drop of crude oil inside, a direct comment on greed and oil extraction.

Simeon Barclay, nominated for the spoken-word jazz performance “The Ruin,” shows in the exhibition a scaffolding structure with slowly falling balloons, a neon sign and a film about the M62 motorway and the industrial landscape of northern England. Kira Freije, considered the favorite by many critics, brings “Unspeak the Chorus” — an installation of fragmented metal sculptures, with cyborg-bone figures caught in moments of intense emotion: laughter, suffering, playful embraces and deep sadness.

It is the first time the Turner Prize exhibition is held within a university institution — MIMA is part of Teesside University. Critics have raised concerns about the space, including noise leaking between installations, while supporters see it as an opportunity to take Britain’s most prestigious art prize beyond London, to the heart of northern England.
