Virus alarm in the Sweden camp, Potter without 11 players against Bosnia in the Nations League
An unexpected health emergency became an obstacle in Sweden’s journey in Nations League group B4. Before the match played in Zenica against Bosnia, coach Graham Potter’s team became a flu hotspot, which left 11 footballers out.
Various players were affected by the virus, among them Yasin Ayari, Benjamin Nygren, Gustaf Lagerbielke, Elliot Stroud and Patrik Walemark. Adding also the previously injured in the group, the former Chelsea coach did not have a full 11 footballers available.
The Swedish team’s doctor, Jonas Werner, clarified the situation, speaking about the measures taken by the staff. “We are doing everything to limit the spread of the virus. We are carefully monitoring the condition of the sick players.”
For safety, the players caught by the virus have been isolated from the rest. The Swedish federation acted quickly, urgently calling up Felix Beijmo, Samuel Dahl, Hugo Bolin, Ken Sema and Eric Smith. Coach Potter spoke of an unprecedented situation: “It has never happened to me to face a situation with so many problems at the same time.”
The match in Bosnia ended with the result 1-1. Gyokeres put Sweden ahead, while Alajbegovic equalised for Bosnia.
