“Weapons” Prequel for Aunt Gladys Takes Shape: Zach Cregger Confirms First Draft of Script, Amy Madigan Returns
Director Zach Cregger has confirmed that the prequel to the horror film “Weapons”, focused on the frightening character Aunt Gladys, is taking shape: the first draft of the script is already written. “The script is in process, and the first draft is written. It’s wonderful. We’re still working on it”, he said in an interview for Men’s Health, given during the promotion of his new horror film “Resident Evil”, which hits cinemas on September 18, 2026.
The best news for fans is that Amy Madigan, who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Aunt Gladys, will return to the role. Cregger categorically ruled out casting a new version of the character: “It will be Amy. I’m not going to do a ‘new Gladys'”.
The prequel will be a character study with horror elements, exploring who Gladys was before she became what she is and how she became that. The director also revealed that he initially had a “Gladys” chapter in the “Weapons” script, but removed it, because, in his opinion, it was better that the audience didn’t know about her yet.
Recall that “Weapons” (2025) was a huge box-office success, and Warner Bros./New Line previously announced that the prequel is in development, co-written with Zach Shields, under the working title “Gladys”.
The film is currently in the development phase and is expected to hit cinemas on September 8, 2028.
