Airstrike in Myanmar kills at least 33 in bombings
At least 33 people were killed and 36 others wounded on Sunday in an airstrike by Myanmar’s military on the town of Kyaktaw in Rakhine state, according to the rebel Arakan Army group, which controls the area.
The military says the latest airstrike is one of the deadliest incidents of its kind in Rakhine since an airstrike on a hospital in the west of the country last December killed at least 30 people, Reuters reported.
The death toll was also confirmed by a humanitarian worker with the Wai Hun Aung organization, whose team operates in the area. Myanmar’s government has previously said it is exercising maximum restraint and trying not to harm civilians.
In 2021, a coup erupted in Myanmar, triggering a civil war, with numerous armed groups fighting Myanmar’s military on multiple fronts.
