US Senate expected to vote on nuclear pact with Saudi Arabia in December — Democrats seek legal review
Democratic senators in the United States say they expect a vote before the end of the year on the Trump administration’s nuclear cooperation agreement with Saudi Arabia, as Al Jazeera writes. Senator Jeff Merkley is working with four other Democratic lawmakers to push for a vote on December 13.
“The Senate will now have the opportunity to fulfil its legal responsibility to study and to express itself on a civil nuclear cooperation agreement that has implications for global security,” Democratic Senator Merkley said.
The United States and Saudi Arabia agreed on a nuclear cooperation deal to build a civil nuclear energy programme in the kingdom in November 2025. Trump’s condition for the pact was the normalisation of relations between Saudi Arabia and Israel — a condition on which Riyadh did not comment.
The agreement comes as Washington has waged its war on Iran on the grounds that Tehran “can never have nuclear weapons,” Al Jazeera recalls.
