Albulena Haxhiu: Kosovo Lost Flora Brovina, the Woman Who Devoted Her Whole Life to the Country

Acting Kosovo president Albulena Haxhiu has reacted to the death of former MP and humanitarian Flora Brovina.

Haxhiu praised Brovina’s contribution in the most difficult periods for Kosovo, describing her as a doctor, humanitarian and human rights activist.

“Kosovo today lost Flora Brovina, the woman who devoted her whole life to her people and her country,” Haxhiu wrote on Facebook.

She emphasized that Brovina stood by children and families during the difficult years for Kosovo, while her public engagement, according to Haxhiu, was a daily form of resistance.

“A doctor, humanitarian and human rights activist, she stood by children and families in the most difficult years for Kosovo. She organized, helped, protested and raised her voice against violence and repression, turning public engagement into a daily form of resistance. Even when this put her directly up against the Serbian regime, she did not withdraw,” she wrote.

Haxhiu also mentioned Brovina’s arrest in the spring of 1999 and her imprisonment in Serbia, where she was sentenced to 12 years in prison.

“In the spring of 1999 she was arrested and taken to Serbian prisons, where she was sentenced to 12 years in prison. Even there she did not give up her convictions. International human rights organizations, writers and institutions from different countries of the world engaged for the release of Flora Brovina. She was a political prisoner, a veteran of the KLA war and part of the generation that sacrificed so much for Kosovo’s freedom,” Haxhiu stated.

In her reaction, she also singled out Brovina’s contribution to Albanian literature, describing her poetry as a reflection of lived experiences.

“Flora Brovina was also a distinct voice in Albanian literature. In the verses she wrote, the woman, the child, pain, birth, loss and freedom took the form of lived experiences. Her poetry had the tenderness of the doctor, the sensitivity of the woman and the resilience of the person who had gone through severe trials,” she wrote.

Haxhiu also recalled Brovina’s engagement after the war in Kosovo’s institutions, emphasizing that for years she was a deputy of the Kosovo Assembly and a signatory of the Declaration of Independence.

At the end, the acting president expressed condolences to Brovina’s family, friends and collaborators.

“My sincerest condolences to the Brovina and Begu families, friends, collaborators and all those who knew and appreciated her.

May the memory of Flora Brovina be eternal,” Haxhiu wrote.
