“Avengers: Endgame Encore” closes weekend with $86 million globally: just about $39 million short of “Avatar’s” record
“Avengers: Endgame Encore” closed its opening weekend atop the global box office, collecting $86 million worldwide — $26 million in North America and $60 million in international markets — according to final studio estimates published Sunday and reported by Variety.
The result takes the 2019 film’s lifetime total to about $2.885 billion, putting it just some $39 million behind James Cameron’s “Avatar” ($2.924 billion) — the all-time record. According to Variety, this is the second-biggest global debut of a re-release in history, while box-office analyst David A. Gross called the case “elite,” noting that re-releases rarely cross $10 million.
The re-release — which brings four additional scenes and a new post-credits scene setting the stage for “Avengers: Doomsday” (December 18, 2026) — has also served Marvel Studios as a promotional push: the studio announced on The Walt Disney Company‘s official site that it has passed $35.075 billion across its 38 films, cementing its position as the most successful franchise in history.
In the weekend race, Sony’s “Resident Evil” held second place with $23.3 million ($103.5 million domestic total), while two new titles — Brad Pitt’s drama “Heart of the Beast” ($20 million) and A24’s “Primetime” with Robert Pattinson ($19.2 million, the studio’s third-biggest opening ever) — took third and fourth, Empire writes.
In India, the re-release continued at a strong pace: according to Sacnilk data cited by Cinema Express, the film collected 7.55 crore rupees on Sunday, taking the three-day total to 22.45 crore. If the run continues, the seven-year battle between Marvel and Cameron for the crown of the highest-grossing film in history could gain a new chapter even before “Doomsday” arrives.
