Broadway stars at Black Theatre United’s fourth annual gala: Ariana DeBose, Billy Porter and Todrick Hall on stage October 5
Broadway’s biggest stars are coming together for a special evening: the organization Black Theatre United (BTU) has revealed, as Playbill reports, new names for its fourth annual gala, taking place on October 5 at the Ziegfeld Ballroom in New York, under the theme “Work To Do”.
Todrick Hall and Tony nominee Jasmine Amy Rogers will take the stage, while special appearances will come from Oscar winner Ariana DeBose, Emmy, Grammy and Tony winner and BTU founder Billy Porter, and Tony winner Qween Jean. The evening’s honorary co-chairs are Oscar and Tony nominee Danielle Brooks and Richard Jay Alexander. They join previously announced names such as Wayne Brady, Vanessa Williams, Brian Stokes Mitchell, Norm Lewis, Wendell Pierce and LaChanze.
This year’s gala will honor with awards personalities who have left their mark on the entertainment industry: Paramount TV Media chairman George Cheeks with the “Accountability Award”, Oscar-nominated actor Delroy Lindo with the “Advocacy Award” and Tony- and Oscar-winning costume designer Paul Tazewell with the “Lifetime Achievement Award”.
The gala’s proceeds will support the organization’s empowering programs — from the “BTU Rise” internship for marketing and press students to the “Marva Hicks” musical-theatre scholarship and the “Broadway Bound” education program. Founded in 2020, BTU has a mission to open doors for young African-American artists and other industry professionals who have historically been marginalized in the world of theatre.
