Serbian MP in Strasbourg: Council of Europe should follow Serbia’s elections with special attention

The vice-president of the People’s Movement of Serbia and MP Đorđe Stanković called in Strasbourg on the Council of Europe to follow the upcoming parliamentary elections in Serbia with special attention, Danas reports.

Stanković, a member of the Serbian parliament’s delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, also called on “European partners” to support the democratic changes being brought about by the student movement.

In his speech on the state of democracy, electoral conditions and the political crisis in Serbia, he warned of the problems that have accompanied elections for years: pressure on voters, misuse of public resources, unequal media conditions and doubts about the integrity of the electoral process.

“Serbia needs free and democratic elections, without electoral theft and without repression,” he said, adding that any new electoral manipulation could further deepen the political crisis in the country.

He closed his speech with the message: “The students are winning,” saying that students and young people “have awakened Serbia” and that behind them stand parents, professors, workers and farmers who refuse political pressure.
