Clashes Between Farmers and Security Forces in Bucharest, Tear Gas Deployed (PHOTOS)

The Romanian farmers’ protest in Bucharest escalated on Tuesday into a clash with security forces, after demonstrators tried to block roads around the government headquarters.

The protest began peacefully in Victory Square, where several hundred to more than 1,000 farmers gathered to oppose problems affecting the livestock and agriculture sectors. The situation grew tense later, when some protesters pushed through barriers and clashed with gendarmes, who used tear gas to disperse the crowd.

The demonstration was organized by Romanian sheep farmers and other agricultural producers. Organizers had asked protesters to bring sheep, tractors and hay bales to the square, but restrictions prevented live animals and heavy machinery from entering the protest zone.

Farmers oppose the EU-wide ban on live sheep and goat exports from Romania, a measure extended until December 31, 2026 due to animal disease outbreaks. They are also demanding higher compensation for animals culled because of epidemics and for crops damaged by drought.

Protesters also demanded the resignation of Alexandru Bociu, head of Romania’s National Sanitary, Veterinary and Food Safety Authority (ANSVSA), accusing him of poor management of the epidemiological situation.

At least three protesters sought medical help after being exposed to tear gas and were treated at the scene. No officers were reported injured, while two participants were taken to a police station for questioning.

The clashes also caused traffic blockages in the area around Victory Square, including the Victoria Underpass and Kiseleff Boulevard. Roads remained closed for several hours before reopening.
