Congressman Lawler writes to Kurti: There is no more important moment for unity, find consensus on the president

The Prime Minister of the Republic of Kosovo, Albin Kurti, has received a letter from U.S. Congressman Michael Lawler, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee of the U.S. House of Representatives and chairman of the Subcommittee on the Middle East and North Africa.

In his letter, Congressman Lawler stressed the importance of national unity and cooperation between political parties, especially after the judgment of the Specialist Chambers in The Hague on 16 September.

“Especially in light of last week’s judgment in The Hague, there is no more important moment for Kosovo’s national unity than now. I urge you to work to ensure that all political actors return to negotiations in good faith and find the necessary consensus to elect the president,” Congressman Lawler added.

He also stressed the importance of institutional stability in relation to focusing on key priorities, including advancing the close partnership with the United States.

Congressman Lawler, one of Kosovo’s most vocal advocates in the U.S. Congress, congratulating Prime Minister Kurti on his fourth term at the head of the Government, stressed the importance of all political actors returning to negotiations, in good faith, for the election of the president, in order to avoid elections.

He reiterated his full support for Kosovo’s membership in NATO, saying that “such a step would be crucial not only for Kosovo’s long-term security, but also for preserving peace across the Western Balkans.”

“Partly as a result of your work towards NATO membership, I see that Kosovo is on the right path to becoming a strong democracy, with solid economic growth and shared prosperity. Government stability is the key. Therefore, I hope that your country will succeed in electing the new president in the coming weeks, to prevent a new round of parliamentary elections — for the fourth time in less than two years,” he wrote.
