Europa League: What the Trophy Is Worth — How the €565 Million Is Split Among Clubs

A triumph in the final would help big clubs like Milan and Juventus repair their financial balance sheets quite a bit, not just for prestige.

Milan, Juventus and other big clubs taking part in the Europa League have plenty of reasons to make a good impression during this competition. A matter of prestige, but also of economics. Because lifting the Europa League trophy guarantees considerable revenues, reaching up to 50 million euros.

The second continental club competition has a total prize pool of 565 million euros. This figure is distributed to clubs based on wins, round qualifications and more. Juventus and Milan have minimum guaranteed revenues of 14.4 and 13.5 million euros respectively.

The gap to the Champions League is large. For the “Old Lady” this difference is around 33 million euros, while for the red-and-blacks it is around 25 million euros.

As can easily be understood, results on the pitch will make the difference. Each win is worth 450 thousand euros, while a draw is worth 150 thousand euros. There are also bonuses tied to the position in the overall standings of the first phase. Finishing in the top 8 guarantees another 600 thousand euros — double that of those ranked from 9th to 16th who go to the play-offs. Not to forget the figure awarded based on the ranking: from 75 thousand euros for 36th place up to 2.7 million euros for first place.

Further, qualifying for the round of 16 earns each club 1.75 million euros, 2.5 million euros for the quarterfinals and 4.2 million euros for the semifinals. Reaching the final is worth 7 million euros and winning the trophy another 6 million euros.

So, in the event of a perfect run, adding also the revenues from the number of matches played, Juventus and Milan could earn 45–50 million euros. Certainly numbers far from the Champions League, but significant.
