Focus — EU approves first joint projects on drones, maritime defense and missile defense
BRUSSELS, 28 September /ATSH-AA/ — The European Council has approved the first five European Defense Projects of Common Interest (EDPCI), aimed at strengthening the bloc’s defense readiness and industrial capacity.
According to the European Council, the projects bring EU member states together to develop capabilities in drones and counter-drone systems, maritime and seabed defense, space, air and missile defense, and the defense of the bloc’s eastern flank.
The EDPCIs were introduced under the European Defense Industry Programme (EDIP), adopted by the EU in 2025.
The projects are designed to enable member states to jointly develop military capabilities considered “critical” to the EU’s security and defense interests — particularly initiatives too large or too complex for countries to carry out individually.
The five projects are now eligible for EU funding through EDIP, which will support their initial deployment and lay the groundwork for possible additional funding under the planned European Competitiveness Fund.
“Today’s decision shows that Europe can be ambitious and deliver on its promises. Member states, together with EU support, are joining forces, sharing their expertise and investing together in the capabilities we need,” said European Commissioner for Defense Andrius Kubilius.
