Germany backs International Criminal Court after U.S. sanctions
Germany has pledged strong support for the International Criminal Court (ICC) at a time when the court is facing pressure and sanctions from the United States.
German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul said international rules are only strong if states are willing to defend them.
“Especially at a time when international institutions are increasingly being called into question, we must support them together with our global partners,” Wadephul said.
He stressed that Germany would help ensure the ICC continues its work even under pressure. Wadephul was expected to visit the court’s headquarters in The Hague and meet his Dutch counterpart, Tom Berendsen.
According to the German minister, the ICC plays an important role in cases where national justice systems are unable or unwilling to prosecute the most serious crimes.
The United States does not recognize the ICC’s jurisdiction and has imposed sanctions on the court and several of its officials. Washington has also accused the court of politically motivated activity.
Established in 2002, the ICC investigates and prosecutes serious international crimes, including genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity.
Last week, during his speech at the UN General Assembly, U.S. President Donald Trump called on the ICC’s member states to withdraw from the court.
