Iran Confirms Meeting With U.S. at UN: It Was Witkoff Who Requested It — Araghchi Restated Tehran’s Conditions

Iranian state media confirmed on Tuesday that Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi met with U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. According to state broadcaster IRIB, the meeting was held at Witkoff’s request, Al Jazeera reports.

Araghchi accepted the American envoy’s request, according to IRIB, in order to restate Iran’s conditions for reopening negotiations. The Iranian confirmation follows U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that his officials had a “very good” three-hour meeting with the Iranian delegation — the first known high-level meeting between the two sides since the collapse of the ceasefire agreement in July.

According to reports, both Witkoff and Jared Kushner took part in the meeting on the American side. Trump said the talks were “very productive” and that another round is scheduled “in the near future”. Witkoff, asked by reporters, said he felt “very good” after the meeting.

However, Iranian sources told Al Jazeera that Tehran has not changed its positions: a security source stated that talks can resume only if the U.S. fulfills its commitments under Iranian demands and is ready for compensation. “The UN is a golden opportunity for the U.S. to return to diplomacy,” a senior Iranian official had said earlier.
