King Charles warns AI leaders of risks if technology falls into the wrong hands

Britain’s King Charles warned artificial intelligence executives on Thursday about the existential risks of the technology falling into the wrong hands, saying sufficient safeguards are needed before it is too late.

“Those who created these technologies are now increasingly warning that artificial intelligence risks developing darker capabilities — perhaps even taking on a life of its own,” the king told executives from Nvidia, Google DeepMind, OpenAI, Anthropic and other companies.

“In this regard, if I may put it that way, there seems to be urgency in the adequate consideration of the existential risks of such technologies falling into the wrong hands and being used in potentially catastrophic ways.”

He added: “The task before you is not simply to advance the technology, but to ensure that it remains firmly in the service of humanity, community and the natural world.”
