Kurti calls for electing the president: ‘It would be unforgivable to go to elections again’

Prime Minister Albin Kurti has called for resolving the issue of Kosovo’s president, asking political leaders and MPs to respect the political agreement between the Vetëvendosje Movement and the LDK on the candidate for president.

At the solemn meeting of the “Kurti 4” Government, a day after the new governing cabinet was voted in the Assembly, Kurti said the country’s institutions are now functional and what remains is the election of the president.

“As we speak today we have a constituted Assembly and an elected Government, and ahead we have the issue of the president and a political agreement between LVV-LDK on the candidate for president,” Kurti declared.

He said the challenge is now the stance of some LDK MPs who, according to him, do not want to implement the agreement reached between the two parties.

“Before us is the challenge with the stance expressed by some MPs from the ranks of the LDK, who do not want to implement the agreement reached with effort and dedication after a not-easy negotiation process,” the prime minister said.

Kurti said the country is very close to resolving this issue and warned that returning to elections would be unnecessary.

“We are so close to resolving the presidency that it would be unforgivable to go to elections again,” he stressed.

In his capacity as LVV chairman and prime minister, Kurti called on political leaders and MPs to conclude the process of electing the president.

“As chairman of LVV and as prime minister, I call on political leaders, my colleagues, MPs: let us resolve the issue of the president, let us give our country the institution in accordance with the will of the citizens,” Kurti declared.

He warned that a new electoral process, according to him, would not bring changes to the political scene and would be contrary to the public interest.

“I am convinced that another unnecessary electoral process would not only bring nothing new to the political mosaic, but would be irresponsibility toward the public interest and great political folly,” Kurti said.

The Prime Minister also spoke about the long period of institutional blockade and successive elections, saying citizens have twice given a clear message through the vote.

According to him, after the February 9, 2025 elections, the country had two more electoral processes, on December 28, 2025 and June 7, 2026, which, as Kurti said, brought no different result to the political mosaic.

Kurti began the speech by thanking citizens for their trust and MPs for voting the new Government, stressing that his cabinet will focus on work for the citizen and the protection of the state.

“Our joint governance is work for the citizen and protection for the state. Our government is a service to the public, not a privilege for the minority,” he said.
