Large fire at Viroi Nature Park in Gjirokastër, suspected arson

A considerable fire broke out on Wednesday afternoon (September 23) at the exit of Lake Viroi in Gjirokastër, engulfing an area of grass and shrubs.

The Gjirokastër MZSH directorate was notified of the situation at around 17:14. Two fire engines with two response teams were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Upon arrival, firefighters found the flames to be of considerable size and immediately began work to isolate and extinguish the fire.

After the intervention, the fire has been fully isolated. One fire engine will remain in the area to monitor the situation and extinguish remaining active embers and hotspots.

The flames burned a considerable area of grass and shrubs.
