LATVIA — Four German ‘Eurofighter’ jets arrive for airspace security during elections
RIGA, Sept 25 /ATSH-DPA/ — Four German “Eurofighter” fighter jets have arrived in Latvia to guarantee the security of the country’s airspace during the parliamentary elections to be held early next month.
The jets, which belong to the 74th Tactical Air Wing of the Bundeswehr, based in Neuburg an der Donau, landed at the Lielvarde military airfield in Latvia.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defense, the aircraft will remain in the country for just over a week and will perform tasks in support of NATO’s integrated air and missile defense system.
Latvia will elect a new parliament on October 3.
Against the backdrop of repeated airspace violations over the Baltic states, the NATO member state has asked allies for support to ensure the secure conduct of the parliamentary elections.
The German Air Force had confirmed the deployment of the “Eurofighters” last week, ahead of the resumption of NATO’s air policing mission from Estonia, which will last for a longer period starting in December 2026.
