Macron at the UN: The Situation in Gaza Is “Shameful” — Hormuz Must Not Be Used as “Blackmail”
French President Emmanuel Macron has described the situation in Gaza as “shameful” in his address to the UN General Assembly, questioning the credibility of the international community if it remains passive.
“What is our credibility worth if we stand idly by over Gaza? Some claim peace has been achieved, but that has not opened humanitarian deliveries. The spectacle is shameful,” Macron said.
The French president also spoke about the US–Israel war against Iran, stressing that the Strait of Hormuz must not be used as “blackmail” and that its reopening is “a priority.”
Macron’s statement comes as diplomats in New York try to find a path to end the nearly seven-month conflict, which has blocked maritime traffic and pushed energy prices to record levels.
France, together with the United Kingdom and Germany, had previously condemned attacks on commercial vessels in the Persian Gulf, accusing Iran of the “de facto closure” of Hormuz.
