Second straight comeback in Tampere: Serbia beats Denmark 3–2 in volleyball — Mašulović scores 34 as knockout-stage spot is secured

TAMPERE — Serbia’s volleyball players defeated Denmark 3–2 in sets (19:25, 21:25, 25:21, 25:23, 16:14) in the fourth round of Group C of the European Championship, being played in Tampere, Finland.

The hero of the triumph was Veljko Mašulović with 34 points. It was the second straight comeback win for the “Eagles” — Serbia had also trailed 2–0 in sets against the Netherlands a few days earlier, but turned the match around again.

The Danes started the match brilliantly and won the first two sets convincingly, while the Serbs woke up in the third set and took it 25:21, then leveled at 2:2 with 25:23. In the decisive fifth set it was point for point — Denmark even had match point, but Serbia won the last three points in a row and closed it 16:14.

Besides Mašulović, Marko Ivović stood out with 13 points, Miran Kujundžić with 11 and Aleksandar Stefanović with 10; for the Danes the best was Mads Jensen with 29 points.

With this win, coach Gheorghe Crețu’s squad secured qualification for the knockout stage, from a position that guarantees an easier opponent at the start of the knockout phase. The opponent in Turin will be known after Thursday’s matches — Serbia plays Belgium on Thursday at 4:00 p.m., and the winner will finish second in Group C, as Finland has practically secured first place.
