Selma Blair: One comment cost me my Hollywood career

American actress Selma Blair has confessed that the fierce backlash that followed an anti-Islam comment of hers in 2024 heavily affected her career and her personal life, claiming she was “erased” from Hollywood.
The 54-year-old spoke about the controversy during a speech at the Anti-Defamation League’s “State of the Arts” event, organised this week at the Jewish Museum in New York, The Hollywood Reporter reported.
The affair is linked to a comment Blair published in February 2024, on a video shared by Abraham Hamra, a Jewish refugee of Syrian origin, at a time when the Israel–Hamas war had caused great international tensions.
In the comment, Blair used extremely harsh language towards Muslims, writing among other things that “Islam has destroyed Muslim countries” and calling for the deportation of persons who, according to her, supported terrorism.
She deleted the comment a short time later and publicly apologised. Blair admitted she had confused Muslims in general with radical Islamists and fundamentalists.
“I offended people and I apologised immediately,” she declared during her latest speech.
After the controversy, the actress parted ways with her agency CAA, while she also lost her public relations team and had changes in her legal and managerial representation.
Speaking about the professional consequences, Blair said:
“The brands I worked with disappeared within a day. Some partnerships, for which I had worked for years, were suspended.”
She added that she lost her agent, lawyer, publicist, book agent, book publicist and social media manager. According to her, some friends from the entertainment industry also distanced themselves.
“I know what it feels like to be erased,” Blair said, adding that the experience also had consequences for her son, Arthur, now 15 years old.
“He is a teenager now. He should be ashamed of me, not afraid for me. Careers come back. His childhood years do not come back.”
Blair said she is not seeking pity and stressed that she is now working again.
“I have a team now that I would go through fire for. It is small and it is my team. I want you to know that before I tell you the part that has not improved. It left a mark.”
Despite the controversy, Blair continues to be active in the entertainment industry. She has several new projects, including an appearance in the series “Criminal Minds”, while she has recently also taken part in the dramatic film “Stay Forte”, on the theme of the Israel–Hamas war.
During the latest event, the actress also announced a new documentary on antisemitism, titled “Hineni”.
