Students in Serbia Submit Election List to the Republic Electoral Commission

Students in blockade and their supporters submitted on Monday, September 14, to the Republic Electoral Commission (RIK) in Belgrade the election list “Studentska lista – Studenti pobeđuju” (“Student List – Students Win”) for the snap parliamentary elections of October 25. The list contains 250 candidates for MPs and was founded as a citizens’ group on September 9, the same day President Aleksandar Vučić called the snap elections.

The submission took place in a festive atmosphere: in front of the Parliament building, where the RIK is headquartered, students danced with the boxes containing the support signatures, accompanied by trumpet players. Signatures were collected at around 90 points across Serbia. On stage appeared students who have been on trial since the Vidovdan protest of June 28, 2025, for overthrowing the constitutional order, as well as students assaulted during the protests.

The list is led by professor Ilija Srdanović, a cardiologist at the Faculty of Medicine in Novi Sad. Among the candidates are activist Zlatko Kokanović, university professors, sociologist Jovo Bakić, academic Radomir Sajčić and political scientist Adem Mavrić from Novi Pazar. The official campaign began on September 10 in Novi Sad, with the call “to victory and beyond victory,” on the principles of justice, solidarity and freedom.

These elections are the first major test of support for President Vučić after nearly two years of student and civic protests, which began after the collapse of the canopy at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, in which 16 people lost their lives. The student movement, which has organized some of the largest demonstrations in decades in Serbia, now aims to turn the protest into institutional representation.
