Tanker hit in the Strait of Hormuz: captain reports strike on the engine room, crew safe
A commercial vessel has been hit by an unknown projectile southeast of the Strait of Hormuz, the British maritime trade monitor UKMTO announces, as Al Jazeera reports.
The tanker’s captain has reported a strike on the ship’s engine room, while the crew is safe and there are no reports of marine pollution.
UKMTO has announced that it is investigating the incident, which marks the latest attack on commercial shipping on the world’s main oil route. Further details about the ship’s flag or its cargo have not yet been given.
The incident comes just one day after UKMTO reported two oil tankers being hit by unidentified projectiles in Hormuz, and on the same day that Tehran has declared that the strait will remain closed until the United States meets Iran’s seven conditions.
Tensions around shipping in the strait remain at their highest levels since the start of the U.S.-Iran war.
