Trump: The U.S. will win the war with Iran ‘very soon’ — promises a sharp drop in fuel prices

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that the United States will win the war with Iran “very soon”, also revealing that American officials have spoken with mediators trying to end the conflict, as the Reuters news agency reports.

“We will win, as far as I’m concerned, it will be in one way or another,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office, adding that the end “will come quite soon”. He also promised that fuel prices “will drop sharply” once the U.S. emerges victorious from the war.

The remarks came after the president rejected over the weekend Tehran’s proposal for a seven-day ceasefire that would have included reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The rejection pushed oil prices up again: on Monday, Brent contracts traded at $108.57 a barrel, more than 4% above Friday’s close.

Iran has stood firm on its conditions for reopening the strait, linking them to sanctions relief, the unfreezing of assets and the lifting of the U.S. naval blockade, while Trump said on Sunday that he expects talks with Tehran to continue this week.
