Trump to cap summit with Xi with a tour of the U.S. archives
U.S. President Donald Trump will continue his summit with Xi Jinping by taking the Chinese leader on Friday to the U.S. National Archives, where they are expected to emphasize their views about history and the direction of ties between their countries.
Trump highlighted progress under a bilateral trade mechanism, citing what he described as increased market access for American farmers and ranchers, while both leaders identified artificial intelligence as a field for cooperation.
In his remarks welcoming Xi, Trump said they would see some of the greatest treasures of U.S. history at the National Archives, including the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution and the Bill of Rights.
They would also see “artifacts that testify to the long and cherished relationship” between China and the United States and “their cultural exchanges,” he said.
“Just as our ancestors crossed the ocean centuries ago to trade, to learn and to build a better world, our two countries are really doing the same thing, and we are very proud of this and of our relationship,” Trump said.
China has not commented on the archives visit, but analysts say Xi may see records related to the U.S. recognition of communist China from Taiwan in 1979.
