U.S. Senate rejects resolution limiting Trump’s war powers against Iran
The U.S. Senate on Thursday narrowly rejected a Democrat-led resolution aimed at stopping the war against Iran until hostilities were authorized by Congress.
The Senate voted 50 to 49 to kill the resolution, which had passed the House of Representatives in July. The vote fell largely along party lines, with most of President Donald Trump’s Republicans voting down the measure and nearly every Democrat voting for it.
After the vote, Democratic Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon admitted the battle is difficult. “We will continue until we win,” he said. Wyden said the biggest challenge came from senators who were “quite careful and looking at constitutional authority.”
Not all Republicans, however, are convinced about the reasons for ending the war. Republican Senator Dan Sullivan of Alaska said: “The war powers vote is about removing American forces from the region, and when there are troops in contact, I don’t believe we should do that.”
Speaking before the vote, Kim, a former State Department official who served in the Middle East, said Americans were “tired of this reckless and costly war.”
