Wellbeing beyond pay: Brikena Berisha on women and youth in the labour market, soon on ‘Rrugëtimi’

In the eighth episode of the “Rrugëtimi” podcast, Brikena Berisha — project manager at the Kosovo Initiative for Stability (IKS) and a member of the Women’s Economic Forum — talks about the reality of the labour market, the cost of living, the position of women and the reasons driving young people to leave Kosovo.

She paints a telling picture: of ten women with prams you might see on Kosovo’s streets, only two may be on maternity leave, while the other eight are unemployed. Meanwhile, Kosovar families spend more than half of their budget on food alone.

Berisha says pay is not the only reason people are leaving Kosovo. Healthcare, education and social protection are among the systemic problems that, in her view, shape emigration decisions.
