Wesley Clark “Shocked” by Thaçi’s Conviction: Former NATO Commander Says Thaçi Also Protected Serb Civilians
The former NATO supreme commander for Europe, Wesley Clark, declared today that he is “shocked” by the decision of the Special Court in The Hague, which sentenced four former senior leaders of the Kosovo Liberation Army to long prison terms.
“I am shocked and angry. I know Thaçi and his fellow fighters, as well as all those who fought in the war. I testified in court, I said what I saw and I knew what was happening in Kosovo regarding our cooperation with the KLA, and I saw no evidence that would justify such a decision”, Clark said for CNN-2.
He stressed that Thaçi did “excellent work”, as he put it, in protecting the innocent Serb population as well, adding that no secret testimony would make him change his mind.
“I met Thaçi three times during the conflict and also in Rambuje. I met him, of course, also when I was in Kosovo. What was happening there was an uprising against an authoritarian regime and against many crimes that some Serbs committed against their Albanian neighbours”, Clark said.
According to him, Albanians in Kosovo felt betrayed by the Serb neighbours with whom they had lived together all their lives. “Thaçi did excellent work in protecting the innocent Serb population as well, as well as those who were in the north of the Ibër river, while Albanians were pushed further south”, Clark declared.
The Specialist Chambers in The Hague sentenced yesterday Hashim Thaçi and Jakup Krasniqi to 25 years in prison, Kadri Veseli to 18 and Rexhep Selimi to 13 years in prison. They were found guilty of war crimes, including unlawful detention, cruel treatment, torture and unlawful killing.
