Zelensky: Ukraine uses domestically produced FP-7 tactical ballistic missile in combat for the first time
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Wednesday on Telegram that the Ukrainian army has used the domestically produced FP-7 tactical ballistic missile in combat for the first time, as Reuters reports.
Zelensky wrote: “Ukrainian tactical ballistic missile FP-7. First combat use. Thank you for the result. Next — production.” The president did not specify where and against which target the missile was used.
The missile is produced by the Ukrainian defense company Fire Point. Ukrainian military analysts describe the FP-7 as a short-range missile of about 200 kilometers (125 miles), while according to data published by the specialized defense media Defence Blog, the range goes up to 250 kilometers, the warhead weighs 200 kilograms and the accuracy is 14 meters.
Russia often uses ballistic missiles in attacks on Ukrainian targets, and Kyiv considers the development of its own tactical ballistic missiles an important element of its defense needs. Earlier this year, Zelensky had praised the results of tactical ballistic missile tests, saying they showed “good potential” for military use.
According to Fire Point, the FP-7 is also being developed as a ballistic interceptor within the European missile defense program “Freyja,” launched this year; Kyiv aims for the prototype of the European anti-ballistic system Freyja to be ready in the first half of next year, according to Davyd Aloian, deputy secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council.
The strategic importance lies in the fact that the FP-7 is a missile produced in Ukraine — Kyiv does not need the authorization of any foreign country, as in the case of the American ATACMS missiles, to use it.
