11 killed in Pakistan in suicide bombing at checkpoint (VIDEO)
At least 11 people were killed and 18 others wounded in an explosion at a checkpoint in northern Pakistan on Saturday, local authorities said, according to AFP.
«Around noon, a suicide bomber drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the checkpoint, killing 11 people,» Saifullah Khan, a police official in the northwestern Pakistani city of Dera Ismail Khan, told AFP.
According to this source, the specific checkpoint located in Darazida is used jointly by police, the military and customs.
A spokesman for the rescue services, Bilal Faizi, said that «so far 11 dead and 18 wounded have been identified». Another source spoke of 30 wounded.
On September 18, at least 31 people, 16 of them policemen, were killed in an explosion and gun attack at the police headquarters in Kohat, a city of 220,000 in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province. Pakistan blames neighboring Afghanistan for the rise in attacks in the province, which the Taliban government denies.
These accusations led to a rupture and armed conflict between the two countries. Pakistan bombed areas along the border, claiming it was targeting insurgents who had fled into Afghan territory.
