Araghchi Warns Europe: Countries Hosting U.S. Bases Will Be ‘Complicit in Aggression’ Against Iran

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warned European countries hosting U.S. military bases on Tuesday that they could be considered “complicit in aggression” against Iran if they help prepare an attack on Tehran. The remarks were made during a meeting with Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, according to the Iranian Foreign Ministry, cited by Al Jazeera.

According to Tehran’s official statement, Araghchi warned about the “dangerous consequences” the normalization of the “violation of law and bullying” by the regimes of the U.S. and Israel would have for international peace and security. The warning comes at a moment of high tension, as Iran says it has received information that the U.S. is preparing to resume military operations with the support of countries in the region.

At the same time, the Iranian chief diplomat stressed that Iran “does not seek war and conflict”, but added that Tehran is ready “to defend itself” if necessary. The double message — warning and extended hand — reflects the line pursued by Tehran in New York, where the Iranian delegation has said it has full authority to revive diplomacy.

The warning to Europe extends Iranian rhetoric beyond the U.S. and Israel, bringing the European continent directly into the war equation — European countries host some of the largest U.S. military bases outside the United States.
