Awaiting the official response: Iran reacts after Trump rejects Hormuz proposal
Iran has declared it will wait for an official response from American negotiators, after President Donald Trump rejected the proposal to open the Strait of Hormuz to commercial vessels within 7 days.
In a post on the “Telegram” network, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said he was aware of the rejection, but accused the American leader of contradictory statements.
Earlier, Trump told reporters at the White House that Tehran’s proposal was unacceptable and that the request for a deal was being made because the regime was significantly losing ground.
“I am rejecting their deal,” Trump said on Saturday, adding that the United States had total control of the strait, through which, according to him, massive quantities of oil currently pass.
For his part, Araghchi wrote on “Telegram” that Trump had made many positive and equally contradictory statements, “which we unfortunately hear often,” he said.
But Trump’s rejection was also backed by the American ambassador to NATO, Matthew Whitaker.
The American administration has labeled the economic blockade against Iran an “Operation of economic expulsion” and is using sanctions to pressure Tehran to stop attacks on vessels in Hormuz.
But some economists have questioned whether the latest sanctions will be effective, as this depends on the reaction of Iran’s key trading partners.
They include China, the largest buyer of Iranian oil, which has ignored previous American sanctions and continued doing business with the Islamic Republic.
