Germany creates first military regiment dedicated to drones, starting in 2027

Germany will create in 2027 its first military regiment dedicated specifically to the use of drones. The news was announced by German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius, who presented the project to raise a specialised unit of the Bundeswehr.

According to the plan, the regiment will consist of around 600 military personnel and will be equipped with unmanned aerial systems. According to German television N-TV, the unit will be able to use drones with a range of up to 500 kilometres.

The new equipment will also include ground systems and single-use attack drones, designed to strike targets directly.

Minister Pistorius announced that the new unit will also have a special company for electronic warfare. This structure aims to give the regiment additional capacities for electronic operations, alongside the use of unmanned systems.

The regiment will be placed within the 10th Armoured Division of the Bundeswehr, Germany’s armed forces.

This division also includes the German brigade deployed in Lithuania, part of Berlin’s engagement on NATO’s eastern flank.
