Iran’s interior minister visits Qatar as mediation to end the U.S.–Iran war continues
Iran’s Interior Minister, Eskandar Momeni, has travelled to Doha at the invitation of his Qatari counterpart, the Tasnim agency announced, as Al Jazeera reports.
Momeni is expected to hold talks with Interior Minister Sheikh Khalid bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani and other Qatari officials during the official visit, while Qatar’s mediation for the resumption of talks between Tehran and Washington continues despite the repeated attacks Iran has suffered.
Last month, Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani described the economic fallout of the U.S.–Israel attack on Iran as “an earthquake” with “shockwaves” extending far beyond the Middle East.
Qatar has played the role of chief mediator between the two sides since the start of the war, and Momeni’s visit is seen as a signal that diplomatic channels remain open even though the talks on reopening the Strait of Hormuz have stalled.
