Gaza – Israeli army kills a senior Hamas commander
STUTTGART, 5 October /ATSH-DPA/ – Israeli forces have killed in the Gaza Strip a senior Hamas commander who had taken part in the 7 October 2023 attack on Israel, the Israeli army announced, almost three years after the attack.
According to the Israeli army, the commander was part of the “Nukhba” unit, an elite commando formation of Hamas’s military wing, which had taken part in the infiltration into Israeli territory on 7 October 2023.
The “Nukhba” unit is believed to have played a key role in organising and carrying out the attack.
During the attack, around 1,200 people were killed and 251 others were taken hostage and taken into the Gaza Strip.
Israel responded to the attack with a broad military offensive in Gaza.
The fighting has caused tens of thousands of victims and great destruction in the territory.
The Israeli army said the killed commander had been preparing further attacks against Israeli civilians and soldiers, while at the same time working to restore Hamas’s military capacities.
According to Israel, these actions constituted a violation of the ceasefire agreement.
However, the Israeli army did not publish in its announcement full details of the manner and the exact place where the commander was killed.
A ceasefire has technically been in force since October 2025, but despite this the Israeli army continues to carry out air strikes in Gaza, which it says are directed at Hamas members and structures.
