Israeli jets strike southern Lebanon again: raids on Zawtar al-Sharqiyah and Marjayoun, suspicious airborne object downed near the border
Israeli fighter jets carried out two new airstrikes on the outskirts of the town of Zawtar al-Sharqiyah in southern Lebanon today, Al Jazeera’s Arabic-language correspondents reported. Another airstrike was carried out near the town of Bani Haiyyan in the Marjayoun area, they added.
The announcement comes on a day of high tension on the Lebanese-Israeli border. The Israeli military said it fired an interceptor at a suspicious airborne object detected in an area of Lebanon near the border with Israel. According to a brief statement, details are still under investigation and no sirens were activated.
Today’s strikes mark a new escalation of Israeli operations in southern Lebanon, against the backdrop of the wider U.S.–Iran war that has also drawn in Israel’s northern front. In recent weeks Israeli jets have repeatedly struck positions in southern Lebanon, which Tel Aviv links to the infrastructure of Iran’s allies in the region.
So far there are no official reports of casualties from today’s strikes. Lebanon and international forces in the south of the country are following the situation with concern, while Lebanese authorities have repeatedly condemned the violation of their sovereignty.
