London – Defence minister: Russia and Putin, the biggest threat to UK security
LONDON, 27 September /ATSH-DPA/ – British Defence Minister Wes Streeting has described Russia and President Vladimir Putin as the biggest threat to the security of the United Kingdom.
According to him, the United Kingdom today faces the greatest risk of being drawn into a war compared to any other period in his lifetime.
Streeting said this situation is one of the reasons the British government has decided to increase defence spending significantly and continuously, to the highest level since the end of the Cold War.
According to the minister, the war in Europe, as well as Russia’s actions, are creating concerns for the security of the United Kingdom, the protection of NATO countries and cooperation among allies.
Streeting said the United Kingdom currently has the necessary capacity to defend the country, but warned the situation would become more uncertain if military spending and capacity remained unchanged for five years.
He stressed that increasing defence power aims to prevent a war.
According to him, the stronger the country’s defence and its alliances, the less likely it is that the United Kingdom will be drawn into a war with Russia or another state.
