Montenegrin Army Comes to the Aid of Sinjajevina Residents: Ten Watering Holes Restored

The drought on Mount Sinjajevina has for years threatened the water supply, hitting livestock farming and the survival of residents in this highland region. Springs and lakes have dried up, but the Montenegrin Army has stepped in to help residents — machinery has been working on the ground for days, and farmers say they are very pleased.

“The army came, made these water holes, cleaned them, and they are still working there. It made me a water hole, I filled it with water and, look, it’s holding — so, it’s a success,” said Radojica Zejak.

“It made me a hole down there, in these valleys, and at Momo Perović’s in Odrag, it made the holes and finished and left. It did me a proper favor,” says Bagiša Zeković.

“So far, 10 watering holes have been restored, and in about two days we will finish in this zone. The goal is to continue next week with the rehabilitation of some roads in northern Montenegro, in the municipalities of Berane and Andrijevica, and this is not the only activity in this direction. We are aware that the road, communications or watering-hole rehabilitation project is not only an infrastructure project, but the creation of conditions for the uninterrupted life of citizens in these difficult areas,” stressed Second Lieutenant Hajrudin Đerekar of the Montenegrin Army.

Although residents repeatedly turned to the local administration of Žabljak for help digging watering holes and road infrastructure, this year, they say, there was no response. The Montenegrin Army did the job at the right time and solved the matter. Conditions have improved, the holes are prepared — not only for domestic animals, but also for the numerous wild animals.
