NEW YORK – Yemen seeks international help against Houthi rebels

NEW YORK, September 25 /ATSH-DPA/ — Yemen has asked the international community for more support to confront the Houthi militia, which controls parts of the country.

Vice President of Yemen’s Presidential Council, Abdullah Abdulkader Al Alimi-Bawzer, told the UN General Assembly that 12 years have passed since what he called the coup carried out by the Houthi terrorist militia.

According to him, the Houthi rebels have raised tensions in the region and turned one of the world’s most important sea routes into an instrument of pressure in the confrontation between Iran and the international community.

He said protecting this sea route is a shared responsibility of the region’s countries and the international community, as Yemen cannot bear this duty alone.

Al Alimi-Bawzer called on other countries not to deal only with crisis management, but to create long-term cooperation that helps increase the security, stability and development of Yemen and the region.

80 countries condemn Houthi rebels

Earlier in the day, at the UN, 80 states condemned the decision of the Iran-backed Houthi militia to resume the conflict in Yemen, as well as its continued attacks against Saudi Arabia and in the Red Sea.

According to the report, the Houthi rebels have recently taken control of Yemen’s western coast through a swift offensive.

This has given them access near the Bab al-Mandab Strait, a very important chokepoint at the entrance to the Red Sea.

As the conflict has escalated, Saudi Arabia has again been attacked from Yemen, its neighbor to the south.

The importance of Bab al-Mandab has grown even more due to the crisis in the Strait of Hormuz, another very important sea route for oil and goods transport.

Passage through the Strait of Hormuz has been significantly restricted since the start of the U.S. war against Iran, while Tehran is trying to control ship movements through this strait.
