NFL Week 1 Games: Fast-Paced Offenses, Surprises and Questions for the Teams

The first week of the NFL opened with plenty of scoring and dramatic moments. The Chicago Bears won 59-37 in Carolina, the highest score for a week-one game in history, while the Buffalo Bills beat the Houston Texans 36-31 in a game with nine lead changes. According to the NFL, this was one of the highest-scoring opening weekends of the season: the Minnesota Vikings scored 29 unanswered points to overturn the Green Bay Packers, the Arizona Cardinals surprised the Los Angeles Chargers on the road, the Philadelphia Eagles blocked a two-point attempt in the final minutes against the Washington Commanders, and there were many standout debuts and dramatic finishes.

The Vikings won with a spectacular comeback after Kyler Murray’s injury, where Carson Wentz led the offense with three touchdown passes. However, the question remains whether the success shows Minnesota’s real strength or Green Bay’s weaknesses — for whom the consistency problem seems to continue, especially on the offensive line and in defense.

New coaches stood out with strong performances: Joe Brady took the big win with the Bills in a tight game in Houston, while Jesse Minter had a dominant debut with the Baltimore Ravens, where big players like Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry impressed. However, concerns remain about Buffalo’s defense and the long-term stability of performance.

The Los Angeles Chargers appeared unprepared for the unexpected opponent Arizona and made costly mistakes — in those moments the need for improvements in the ground game and the interior of the line was also seen. Chicago, on the other hand, seems set to load much of the offensive spectacle on Caleb Williams and a wealth of players who create danger with the ball, but their defense needs reinforcement if they want to be serious about the trophy.
