Police: husband of the former director of the Durrës Post Office arrested

Feta Mataj, 44, has been arrested by Durrës Police following the decision of the Durrës Court of First Instance of General Jurisdiction, which imposed on him the security measure of “arrest in prison.”

Mataj, a resident of neighbourhood No. 15 in Durrës and the husband of the former director of the Albanian Post, Durrës branch, Elisabeta Mataj, is accused of the criminal offence of “extortion through threats or violence to hand over property, committed in cooperation.”

As part of the investigations, an employee of the Post branch stated that Feta Mataj demanded that the employees hand over 25,000 lek each month.

Mataj had previously held the post of deputy director of the cleaning and greenery enterprise at Durrës Municipality.

His wife, Elisabeta Mataj, is under the measure of “house arrest” and is being investigated over suspicions linked to the embezzlement of 69 million lek, funds intended for citizens at the Post branches in Shijak and Krujë.

Police said the court’s decision against Feta Mataj was executed by the Serious Crimes specialists of the Durrës Police Directorate. The procedural materials were passed to the Prosecution for further action.
