Rana Begum’s first solo exhibition in New York: light and colour take over the Lehmann Maupin gallery

New York now has a new address for lovers of minimalist art: the Lehmann Maupin gallery at 501 West 24th Street in Chelsea is hosting, as Lehmann Maupin announces, the first New York solo exhibition of the Bangladeshi-British artist Rana Begum, which will remain open until 31 October 2026.

Begum, born in Bangladesh in 1977 and based in London, has cultivated over two decades a distinctive visual language through the interplay of light, colour and geometric forms, inspired by her childhood memories of the light and architecture of Bangladesh.

The exhibition comes after the artist’s American museum debut at the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah in 2025. In New York she presents a new series of large-scale wall works, painted and folded aluminium sculptures and a new group of works on paper, alongside her first two-screen video work.

As the gallery writes, these works, in metal, stone and glass, display a distinctive physical presence, shifting from sculpture to painting and architecture, while inviting the viewer to a sensory experience of light, colour and movement.

Begum’s career is enjoying an excellent year: after Lehmann Maupin announced her representation in January 2025 and the success of her museum debut, the artist is now receiving recognition in the United States as well.

With works built from industrial materials and reflective surfaces, Begum creates dynamic visual experiences: the reflected light and shadows change depending on the viewer’s position, creating a dialogue between the artwork, the space and the observer.
