Shawn Horcoff named interim GM of the Detroit Red Wings, replacing Steve Yzerman

Shawn Horcoff has been named interim general manager of the Detroit Red Wings. A former NHL center, Horcoff was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the fourth round of the 1998 draft (99th pick) and played 1,008 regular-season games, recording 511 points (186 goals, 325 assists), plus 30 points in 46 playoff games during his career with the Oilers, Dallas Stars and Anaheim Ducks. He has been part of the Red Wings organization since the 2016-17 season, initially serving as director of player development, then as assistant GM and, since the 2021-22 season, as GM of their AHL team in Grand Rapids.

According to the NHL, Horcoff replaces Steve Yzerman, who left the position of executive president and general manager on July 15, after serving as GM since April 19, 2019. As reported in the club’s announcement, owner and governor Chris Ilitch praised Horcoff’s experience and gave him full decision-making authority while the organization continues a careful process to identify the permanent leader of hockey operations.

The Detroit Red Wings missed the playoffs for the tenth straight time, after a previous run of 25 consecutive appearances. After January 25 the team was 32-16-5 and tied with the Carolina Hurricanes for the best record in the Eastern Conference, but finished the rest of the season 9-15-5 and closed with a 41-31-10 record. On September 11 it was announced that Dylan Larkin will no longer be captain; he had requested a trade after the season but said he will take part in training camp while the team moves in a new direction.

As the NHL reports, Horcoff will serve as interim general manager with full authority and remains under consideration for the permanent position with the Red Wings while the club continues its strategic search.
