Sisi speaks with Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council chief: Egypt stresses preserving the unity of the Yemeni state
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held a phone conversation on Friday with the head of Yemen’s Presidential Leadership Council, Rashad al-Alimi, on the latest developments in Yemen and efforts to restore stability in the country.
According to the Egyptian presidency, el-Sisi reiterated Egypt’s continued support for Yemen and stressed the need to preserve the unity of the Yemeni state and its institutions.
The call comes as fighting between Yemeni government forces and the Houthis has intensified in recent weeks, with recent government advances in Lahij province, near the Bab al-Mandeb Strait, another strategic artery of world trade.
Egypt, as a Red Sea coastal country, has a direct interest in the security of navigation through Bab al-Mandeb and the Suez Canal, which have been severely affected by Houthi attacks on merchant ships.
The crisis in Yemen is closely linked to the wider US–Iran war, as Tehran backs the Houthis, while Washington and its regional allies back Yemen’s internationally recognised government.
